»WONDERFULLY BEAUTIFUL«
Like the first, Johannes Brahms' second serenade in A major is influenced by the court orchestra in his Detmold workplace and by the study of classical models. Conceived for a small orchestra without violins, the 25-year-old Brahms placed this "preliminary study" on the way to his first symphony formally in the vicinity of Mozart's wind serenades. But in the first movement "Schubertian" motifs also ring through; the dance-like Quasi Menuetto is reminiscent of Haydn. And about the main Adagio, inspired by Bach's canons and fugues, Clara Schumann said: »It is wonderfully beautiful! There's something ecclesiastical about the whole piece, it could be an Eleison."

Wie die erste ist auch Johannes Brahms’ zweite Serenade in A-Dur von der Hofkapelle seiner Detmolder Wirkungsstätte und vom Studium klassischer Vorbilder beeinflusst. Für kleines Orchester ohne Violinen erdacht, rückt der 25-jährige Brahms diese »Vorstudie« auf dem Weg zu seiner ersten Symphonie formal in die Nähe von Mozarts Bläserserenaden. Doch klingen im ersten Satz auch »Schubert’sche« Motive durch; das tänzerische Quasi Menuetto erinnert an Haydn. Und über das tragende, von Kanons und Fugen Bachs inspirierte Adagio meinte Clara Schumann: »Es ist wunderbar schön! Das ganze Stück hat etwas Kirchliches, es könnte ein Eleison sein.«
