In 2023 the finals of the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition will take place at Theater Dortmund. It is one of the most important and traditional competitions for opera singing in the world. Every year, more than 1,000 young talents take part in around 70 qualifying rounds on all continents. Around 150 of them make it to the final and will fight for one of the prizes and engagements at renowned opera houses in Dortmund in 2023.

Founded in 1982 by the then director of the Vienna Chamber Opera, Hans Gabor, the competition has already produced many international opera stars. In order to open the door to an international career for the young talents, Gabor brought only opera directors into the expert jury. And that hasn't changed to this day. And so in 2023 not only singers from all over the world, but also representatives of important opera houses as well as artistic directors and casting directors will come to Dortmund to rediscover one or the other talent. This is what makes this competition so extraordinary and so popular with young talent.

Until 2012, the finals always took place in Vienna. From 2013 the competition went on tour and is always a guest in a different city with the final week. These included Amsterdam, Cape Town, Moscow, Erfurt and Jurmala in Latvia. "We are very pleased that Artistic Director Heribert Germeshausen invited us to Dortmund in 2023. He has accompanied the competition as a juror for many years,” explain the organizers Isabella Gabor and Holger Bleck.

The International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition has produced stars such as Angela Gheorghiu, Elina Garanca, Marina Mescheriakova, Ildikó Raimondi, Antonio Poli, Rachel Willis-Sørensen, Pretty Yende, Antonio Poli and Lise Davidsen.

Intendant Heribert Germeshausen has engaged several prizewinners of the Belvedere Singing Competition at the Theater Dortmund: Tenor Sungho Kim won first prize in 2018, baritone Mandla Mndebele third prize and the audience prize in 2017.

2023 findet das Finale des Internationalen Hans Gabor Belvedere Gesangswettbewerbs am Theater Dortmund statt. Er ist einer der bedeutendsten und traditionsreichsten Wettbewerbe für Operngesang weltweit. Jedes Jahr nehmen mehr als 1.000 junge Talente an rund 70 Qualifikationsrunden auf allen Kontinenten teil. Etwa 150 von ihnen kommen ins Finale und werden 2023 in Dortmund um einen der Preise und um Engagements an renommierten Opernhäusern kämpfen.

Gegründet 1982 vom damaligen Direktor der Wiener Kammeroper, Hans Gabor, hat der Wettbewerb bereits viele internationale Opernstars hervorgebracht. Um den jungen Talenten das Tor zu einer internationalen Karriere zu eröff nen, holte Gabor ausschließlich Operndirektoren in die Fachjury. Und das ist bis heute unverändert. Und so werden 2023 nicht nur Sänger*innen aus aller Welt, sondern auch Vertreter*innen bedeutender Opernhäuser sowie Intendant*innen und Castingdirektor*innen nach Dortmund kommen, um wieder das eine oder andere Talent zu entdecken. Das macht diesen Wettbewerb so außergewöhnlich und bei den jungen Talenten so beliebt.

Bis 2012 fand das Finale stets in Wien statt. Ab 2013 ging der Wettbewerb auf Reisen und ist mit der Finalwoche immer in einer anderen Stadt zu Gast. Das waren unter anderem Amsterdam, Kapstadt, Moskau, Erfurt und das lettische Jurmala. „Wir freuen uns sehr darüber, dass uns Intendant Heribert Germeshausen 2023 nach Dortmund eingeladen hat. Er begleitet den Wettbewerb als Juror seit vielen Jahren“, erklären die Organisator*innen Isabella Gabor und Holger Bleck.

An das Theater Dortmund hat Intendant Heribert Germeshausen einige Preisträger des Belvedere Gesangswettbewerbs engagiert: So gewann der Tenor Sungho Kim im Jahr 2018 den 1. Preis, der Bariton Mandla Mndebele 2017 den 3. Preis sowie den Publikumspreis.
