This philharmonic concert travels back and forth between Germany and Great Britain – both musically and historically. In 1877 the young English composer Ethel Smyth came to Leipzig to study music at the conservatory. Thanks to her talent and her enormous willpower, she managed, even as a single woman, to become part of a musical circle that also included Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. Back in England, she became famous not only as a successful composer, but also as a staunch supporter of women's rights and a member of the suffragette movement. Her third and most successful opera The Wreckersfascinates with a captivating story about fanatical religiosity and a musical design that is often compared to Richard Wagner's opera music. After Smyth discovered her hearing loss in 1913, she wrote one of her last works - the Concerto for Violin, Horn and Orchestra. This lyrical work, shaped by varied orchestration and experimental rhythms, has enjoyed and continues to enjoy performances throughout Europe.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy traveled from Germany to Great Britain in 1829. The internationally successful musician also admired the breathtaking nature of Scotland on his concert tour. Thirteen years later he processed his impressions and inspirations in his 3rd symphony, called the "Scottish", which, due to its combination of the German-Romantic tonal language with Scottish national character, is one of his most popular and most-performed works.

How inspiring youth can be for later life is shown not only by the biographies and works of Ethel Smyth and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, but also by the soloists in this concert: Ioana Cristina Goicea and Tillmann Höfs are prizewinners at the German Music Competition in 2018 and 2017 .

Zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien reist dieses Philharmonische Konzert hin und her – sowohl musikalisch als auch historisch. 1877 kam die junge englische Komponistin Ethel Smyth nach Leipzig, um am Konservatorium Musik zu studieren. Durch ihre Begabung sowie durch ihre enorme Willensstärke schaffte sie es, selbst als alleinstehende Frau Teil eines musikalischen Zirkels zu werden, der auch Johannes Brahms oder Clara Schumann umfasste. Zurück in England wurde sie nicht nur als erfolgreiche Komponistin berühmt, sondern auch als entschiedene Unterstützerin der Frauenrechte und Mitglied der Suffragetten-Bewegung. Ihre dritte und erfolgreichste Oper The Wreckers fasziniert mit einer fesselnden Geschichte über fanatische Religiosität und einer musikalischen Gestaltung, die oft mit Richard Wagners Opernmusik verglichen wird. Nachdem Smyth im Jahr 1913 ihren Gehörverlust feststellen musste, entstand eines ihrer letzten Werke – das Konzert für Violine, Horn und Orchester. Dieses lyrische, durch abwechslungsreiche Orchestrierung und experimentelle Rhythmen gestaltete Werk erfreute und erfreut sich europaweiter Aufführungen.

Von Deutschland nach Großbritannien reiste 1829 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Der international erfolgreiche Musiker bewunderte auf seiner Konzertreise auch die atemberaubende Natur Schottlands. So verarbeitete er seine Eindrücke und Inspirationen noch 13 Jahre später in seiner die „Schottische“ genannten 3. Sinfonie, welche durch ihre Kombination der deutsch-romantischen Tonsprache mit schottischem Nationalcharakter zu seinen beliebtesten und meistgespielten Werken zählt.

Wie inspirierend die Jugendzeit für den späteren Lebensweg sein kann, zeigen nicht nur die Biografien und Werke Ethel Smyths und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, sondern auch die Solistin und der Solist dieses Konzertes: Ioana Cristina Goicea und Tillmann Höfs sind Preisträger des Deutschen Musikwettbewerbs 2018 bzw. 2017.
