Ein Stück Holz, das oben kreischt und unten brummt« – keine sehr schmeichelhafte Beschreibung für das Violoncello. Sie stammt von Antonín Dvořák. Ausgerechnet von demjenigen, der wohl eines der schönsten Cellokonzerte überhaupt komponierte. Das Cellokonzert ist das letzte große Werk, das Dvořák während seines dreijährigen Amerika-Aufenthalts schrieb. In der Musik steckt alles, was Dvořáks Musik auszeichnet: wunderbar gesangliche Themen, oft angehaucht von den Melodien seiner böhmischen Heimat, große dramatische Steigerungen, lyrische Emotionalität, eine fein ausgeklügelte Instrumentation. Wer diese Musik hört, merkt: Insgeheim muss Dvořák das Cello geliebt haben.

Sergej Rachmaninows zweite Sinfonie entstand ebenfalls zu einer Zeit, als sich der Komponist (mal wieder) fernab der russischen Heimat befand und in Dresden residierte. Rachmaninow verbrachte 25 Jahre in der Emigration. Ein Umstand, der ihm Zeit seines Lebens schwer zu schaffen machte und ihn immer wieder auf die Suche trieb: nach seiner Identität, seiner Heimat und nicht zuletzt nach sich selbst.

A piece of wood that squeaks at the top and hums at the bottom" - not a very flattering description for the cello. It comes from Antonín Dvořák. Ironically, by the one who probably composed one of the most beautiful cello concertos ever. The Cello Concerto is the last major work that Dvořák wrote during his three-year stay in America. The music contains everything that characterizes Dvořák's music: wonderful vocal themes, often inspired by the melodies of his Bohemian homeland, great dramatic escalations, lyrical emotionality, a finely thought-out instrumentation. Whoever hears this music realizes that Dvořák must have secretly loved the cello.

Sergei Rachmaninoff's second symphony was also written at a time when the composer was (once again) far from his Russian homeland and was residing in Dresden. Rachmaninoff spent 25 years in exile. A circumstance that made things difficult for him throughout his life and drove him to search again and again: for his identity, his homeland and last but not least for himself.
