"When love and strength marry, the favor of the gods rewards man," says almost imploringly at the end of Ludwig van Beethoven's fantasy for piano, choir and orchestra. The words of the poet Christoph Kuffner aptly describe what this comparatively unknown work by the Bonn composer is all about: similar to the later ninth symphony, symphony and song are married. And the orchestra, singers and piano enter into a community that tries out new things. Dmitri Shostakovich's 13th symphony from the early 1960s, whose nickname "Babi Jar" already indicates the historical context, has a completely different shape: the SS massacre of Jews in 1941 near Kiev. With this symphony, Shostakovich finally throws off political chains and shows himself to be an unswerving artist, who is unconditionally committed to humanism and freedom with an extremely stirring work. Against this background, it may not be a coincidence that for the first time since his third he combines instrumental music and singing - at least this parallel to Beethoven is obvious.

„Wenn sich Lieb und Kraft vermählen, lohnt dem Menschen Göttergunst“, heißt es nahezu beschwörend am Schluss von Ludwig van Beethovens Fantasie für Klavier, Chor und Orchester. Die Worte des Dichters Christoph Kuffner beschreiben treffend, was es mit diesem vergleichsweise unbekannten Werk des Bonners auf sich hat: Ähnlich wie in der späteren neunten Symphonie vermählen sich Symphonik und Gesang. Und Orchester, Sänger und Klavier gehen eine durchaus Neues erprobende Gemeinschaft ein. Ganz anders geformt ist Dmitri Schostakowitsch 13. Symphonie von Anfang der 1960er-Jahre, dessen Beiname „Babi Jar“ bereits den historischen Zusammenhang andeutet: das SS-Massaker an Juden im Jahre 1941 bei Kiew. Schostakowitsch wirft mit dieser Symphonie endgültig politische Fesseln ab und zeigt sich als unbeirrbarer Künstler, der sich mit einem ungemein aufrüttelnden Werk bedingungslos für Humanismus und Freiheit einsetzt. Dass er erstmals seit seiner Dritten wieder Instrumentalmusik und Gesang verbindet – zumindest diese Parallele zu Beethoven liegt dann doch auf der Hand – mag vor diesem Hintergrund kein Zufall sein …
