If one thinks of the classical solo concerto, the trombone as a concerting instrument does not immediately come to mind. The Italian composer Nino Rota, today primarily known for his internationally successful film music, devoted himself to this instrument despite – or precisely because of this – and proves with his concerto for trombone and orchestra the tonal versatility it offers. With virtuoso playing techniques, Rota impressively demonstrates the singing qualities and harmonic flexibility of this instrument, which far too rarely appears as a solo instrument.
Arthur Pryor treats the trombone with similar virtuosity in his Fantastic Polka. Trained on this instrument and as leader of the Sousa Band, he knew how to use the playing techniques very well and combined the developments in light music at the beginning of the 20th century with the classical accompaniment of a concert piece and the lively rhythms of the polka. Alexander Merzyn, GMD of the Staatstheater Cottbus, and the 23-year-old Ukrainian trombonist Polina Tarasenko will focus on this unusual solo instrument.

Denkt man an das klassische Solokonzert, kommt einem nicht zuallererst die Posaune als konzertierendes Instrument in den Sinn. Der italienische Komponist Nino Rota, heute vorrangig für seine international erfolgreichen Filmmusiken bekannt, widmete sich dennoch – oder gerade deshalb – diesem Instrument und beweist mit seinem Konzert für Posaune und Orchester, welche klangliche Vielseitigkeit es bietet. Eindrucksvoll demonstriert Rota mit virtuosen Spieltechniken die sanglichen Qualitäten und die harmonische Flexibilität dieses Instruments, das viel zu selten solistisch in Erscheinung tritt.
Ähnlich virtuos behandelt auch Arthur Pryor die Posaune in seiner Fantastic Polka. An diesem Instrument ausgebildet und als Leiter der Sousa Band wusste er die Spieltechniken bestens zu nutzen und verband die Entwicklungen der Unterhaltungsmusik zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts mit der klassischen Begleitung eines Konzertstücks und den beschwingten Rhythmen der Polka. Den Fokus auf dieses ungewöhnliche Soloinstrument setzen Alexander Merzyn, GMD des Staatstheaters Cottbus, und die 23-jährige ukrainische Posaunistin Polina Tarasenko.
