Bekanntermaßen sollte man den Aussagen von Komponisten über ihre eigenen Werke nicht immer 100 Prozent Glauben schenken. Dieses Zitat von dem einst in Hamburg lehrenden György Ligeti ist jedoch so voller Bilder, dass wir es Ihnen nicht vorenthalten wollen: „Ramifications sind gleichsam ein Endpunkt in der Entwicklung von ‚dicht und statisch‘ zu ‚durchbrochen und beweglich‘. Besonders in den Gegenden, in denen das musikalische Gewebe durchsichtig und engmaschig ist, erscheint eine ganz neue Art von ‚unsicherer‘ Harmonik, als ob die Harmonien der gleichmäßigen Temperatur oder gar der Diatonik ‚verdorben‘ wären. Die Harmonien haben einen ‚haut goût‘, Verwesung ist in die Musik eingezogen. Ramifications sind ein Beispiel dekadenter Kunst.“ Mit den folgenden sieben Liedern von Alma Maria Mahler, orchestriert von Colin und David Matthews, wird eine zu wenig als Künstlerin und zu oft nur als (mehrfache) Ehepartnerin wahrgenommene Frau vom Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts geehrt. Und man hört in der Interpretation von Kate Lindsey: Das ist weit mehr als eine Begleiterscheinung Gustavs! Zum Abschluss präsentiert Dirigentin Anja Bihlmaier Musik aus dem hohen Norden: Keinem skandinavischen Komponisten sind Klischee-Zuschreibungen wohl mehr zum Verhängnis geworden als dem Finnen Jean Sibelius. Erstens schuf er mit der „Finlandia“ die inoffizielle Hymne seines Heimatlandes. Zweitens ging er im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts seine eigenen, also nicht immer modernen Wege. Und drittens zog er sich schon bald in sein einsames Landhaus zurück; fortan war er oft nur der „grüblerische Finne“. Doch seine Erste ist mutig, berückend ausdrucksstark, überwältigend spätromantisch, ein wichtiges Werk für die Musik auf der Schwelle von der Spätromantik zur Moderne.

However, this quote from György Ligeti, who once taught in Hamburg, is so full of imagery that we don't want to withhold it from you: "Ramifications are, as it were, an end point in the development from 'dense and static' to 'openwork and mobile'. Especially in those areas where the musical fabric is transparent and close-meshed, a whole new kind of 'uncertain' harmony appears, as if the harmonies were 'spoiled' of even temperature or even diatonic. The harmonies have a 'haut goût', decay has entered the music. Ramifications are an example of decadent art." The following seven songs by Alma Maria Mahler, orchestrated by Colin and David Matthews, pay tribute to a woman of the early 20th century too little perceived as an artist and too often only as a (multiple) spouse. And one hears in Kate Lindsey's interpretation: this is far more than a companion piece to Gustav! Finally, conductor Anja Bihlmaier presents music from the far north: No Scandinavian composer has been ascribed more clichés than the Finn Jean Sibelius. First, he created the unofficial anthem of his homeland with his "Finlandia". Secondly, in the course of the 20th century he went his own, that is, not always modern, ways. And third, he soon retired to his lonely country house; henceforth he was often just the "brooding Finn." But his First is courageous, enchantingly expressive, overwhelmingly late Romantic, an important work for music on the threshold from late Romanticism to modernism.
