Orchesterkompositionen in Cinemascope: Im Mittelpunkt des 8. Sinfoniekonzerts steht ein »stratosphärischer Klangkoloss«, wie der Schriftsteller Henry Miller das mit mehr als 100 Mitwirkenden riesenhaft besetzte Orchesterstück ›Amériques‹ von Edgar Varèse nannte. Der französische Komponist floh vor dem Chaos des Ersten Weltkriegs nach Amerika und goss dort seine ersten Eindrücke des pulsierenden New York in Töne, samt der allgegenwärtigen Polizeisirenen. Bildhaft und assoziativ ist dieses Werk der amerikanischen Moderne, die eine Art Fortführung in den vielfach oscarprämierten Soundtracks von John Williams fand. Erst durch sie bekommen viele der ikonischen Szenen aus Hollywood-Blockbustern ihre eindringliche Emotionalität. Unweit der Traumfabrik Hollywood lebte auch Sergej Rachmaninow, der die letzten Jahre seines Lebens in einem Haus in Beverly Hills verbrachte. Seine Musik weist in ihrer emotionalen Dichte und Bildhaftigkeit durchaus Parallelen zur Filmmusik auf – etwa die 2. Sinfonie, die vor schwelgerisch-dahinströmenden Melodien schier überquillt. Orchestral compositions in cinemascope. At the heart of the 8th symphony concert is a “stratospheric Colossus of Sound”, as writer Henry Miller once described the orchestral work by Edgard Varèse with its gigantic number of musicians. The French composer had fled to America from the chaos of World War I and there poured his first impressions of the pulsating city of New York – including the ever-present police sirens – into sound. This work of American modernism is vivid and associative. The soundtracks by John Williams, which have won several Oscars, can be said to follow in its footsteps. It is to his music that many of the iconic scenes of Hollywood blockbusters owe their haunting emotional quality. Sergei Rachmaninov also did not live far from the Hollywood dream factory. He spent the last years of his life in a house in Beverly Hills. In its emotional density and expressiveness, his music undoubtedly has similarities to film music. Take, for instance, the 2nd Symphony, which brims with rapturous, flowing melodies. Hugely impressive symphonic drama.
