The Dream of Gerontius

With the oratorio The Dream of Gerontius, which premiered in 1900, Edward Elgar created one of the best-known English-language choral works. Referring to a text by the English Cardinal John Henry Newman, the Catholic composer set the visions of the afterlife and the transfiguration of the soul of a dying person to music using the tonal possibilities of the late-Romantic orchestra, which also lends musical expression to the scenarios and moods described.

After a two-year delay, the Chorbiennale can take place again in 2023. With the support of international performers, the choirs perform together again.

Mit dem 1900 uraufgeführten Oratorium »The Dream of Gerontius« schuf Edward Elgar eines der bekanntesten englischsprachigen Chorwerke. Auf einen Text des englischen Kardinals John Henry Newman rekurrierend vertonte der katholische Komponist die Jenseitsvisionen und die Verklärung der Seele eines Sterbenden mit den Klangmöglichkeiten des spätromantischen Orchesters, welches den beschriebenen Szenerien und Stimmungen auch musikalischen Ausdruck verleiht.
Nach einer zweijährigen Verzögerung kann die Chorbiennale 2023 wieder stattfinden. Mit der Unterstützung internationaler Mitwirkender treten die Chöre wieder gemeinsam auf.
