A Feast in the Time of the Plague

"Mozart and Salieri" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and "Feast in the Time of Plague" by Caesar Cui are chamber and, at the same time, spectacular performances based on the unchanging text of the famous "Little Tragedies" by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.

According to the director of the performance, Rustem Galeev, the two works have many connecting threads. And this is not only the author of a literary source, not only close to each other years of creation of compositions and ideological affinity of composers - representatives of the creative union "Mighty Handful", but, most importantly, a large number of internal musical and dramatic ties. That is why the director of the performance placed Caesar Cui's opera A Feast in the Time of Plague inside Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Mozart and Salieri, subordinating both works to the theme of a person's moral choice in the face of death.

This performance is about choice; but there are no answers here. And it was the search for these answers that prompted Rustem Galeev to unite two operatic works, each of which offers its own life outcome: either a person, forgetting about everything (primarily about conscience), tries to “snatch” the last minutes of “happiness”, or leaves the way Mozart leaves this world - he writes the immortal "Requiem" and remains for centuries. It is no coincidence that the entire production ends with the performance of Lacrimosa, the lyrical culmination of this great work by the Austrian composer.

Моцарт и Сальери» Николая Римского-Корсакова и «Пир во время чумы» Цезаря Кюи – это камерные и, одновременно, зрелищные спектакли, в основе которых лежит неизменный текст знаменитых «Маленьких трагедий» Александра Сергеевича Пушкина.

По мнению режиссёра спектакля Рустэма Галеева два произведения имеют множество связующих нитей. И это не только автор литературного первоисточника, не только близкие друг к другу годы создания сочинений и идеологическое родство композиторов – представителей творческого союза «Могучая кучка», но и, главное, большое количество внутренних музыкальных и драматургических связей. Именно поэтому постановщик спектакля поместил оперу Цезаря Кюи «Пир во время чумы» внутрь оперы Николая Римского-Корсакова «Моцарт и Сальери», подчиняя оба произведения теме нравственного выбора человека перед лицом смерти.

«Если через какое-то время меня не станет, то зачем тогда совесть, Бог...? Позволено ли всё, если дальше ничего нет...?».

Этот спектакль – о выборе; но ответов здесь нет. И именно поиск этих ответов побудил Рустэма Галеева объединить между собой два оперных произведения, каждый из которых предлагает свой жизненный исход: либо человек, забывая обо всём (в первую очередь, о совести), пытается «урвать» последние минуты «счастья», либо уходит так, как покидает этот мир Моцарт – пишет бессмертный «Реквием» и остаётся в веках. Не случайно всю постановку завершает исполнение Lacrimosa – лирической кульминации этого великого сочинения австрийского композитора.
