That was the inspiration behind Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade: a glittering, wide-screen orchestral epic, and the climax of a concert that opens with a postcard from sunny Italy and then the deliciously tuneful piano concerto that Shostakovich wrote as a present for his teenage son. It’s a joyous showcase for two real rising stars: conductor Paolo Bortolameolli and the award-winning Elisabeth Brauss.
