Opowieści zaczerpnięte z Owidiuszowych Metamorfoz stały się inspiracją dla wielu barokowych dzieł. Trudno się dziwić, wszak starorzymski poemat obfituje w zachwycające i pełne symboli historie, a tytułowy motyw przemiany daje twórcom przestrzeń do różnorakich interpretacji. Doskonałym tego przykładem jest mit o miłości pasterza Acisa i nimfy Galatei, który przekuty przez Johna Gaya (zapewne z pomocą innych poetów) w znakomite libretto stał się podstawą jednoaktowej opery Georga Friedricha Haendla. Nowej scenicznej interpretacji tego mieniącego się barokowym światłocieniem dzieła podjęła się Natalia Kozłowska. 

Treść opery jest z pozoru prosta. Młodzi pałają wzajemną miłością, lecz ich szczęście przerywa okrutny atak cyklopa Polifemusa. Odrzucony przez nimfę olbrzym pozbawia Acisa życia. Galatea jednak swą czarodziejską mocą przemienia kochanka w strumyk, czyniąc go nieśmiertelnym. Jakże piękne odzwierciedlenie znajdują uczucia targające bohaterami w muzyce Haendla – z jednej strony rozbrzmiewa miłość, szczęście i spełnienie, z drugiej grzmi rozczarowanie i wściekłość. Pełne życia i radości arie kochanków zwieńczone duetem Happy we! kontrastują z wprowadzającym złowieszczy nastrój chórem Wretched lovers obfitującym w muzyczne symbole – od galopujących imitacji, po przerywane pauzami akordy. Czarowne brzmienie utrzymanej w pastoralnym nastroju finałowej arii Galatei niesie ukojenie i wiarę w niepokonaną siłę miłości.

Stories taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses became an inspiration for many Baroque works. It is hardly surprising, after all, the ancient Roman poem abounds in delightful stories full of symbols, and the title motif of transformation gives the creators space for various interpretations. A perfect example of this is the myth of the love of the shepherd Acis and the nymph Galatea, which, reforged by John Gay (probably with the help of other poets) into an excellent libretto, became the basis for George Frideric Handel's one-act opera. Natalia Kozłowska undertook a new stage interpretation of this work sparkling with baroque chiaroscuro. 

The content of the opera is seemingly simple. The young love each other, but their happiness is interrupted by the cruel attack of the Cyclops Polyphemus. Rejected by the nymph, the giant deprives Acis of his life. Galatea, however, with her magical power, transforms her lover into a stream, making him immortal. How beautifully the feelings tormenting the characters are reflected in Handel's music - on the one hand, love, happiness and fulfillment resound, on the other, disappointment and rage thunder. Arias of lovers full of life and joy, crowned with the duo Happy we! contrast with the ominous chorus of Wretched loversabounding in musical symbols - from galloping imitations to chords interrupted by pauses. The enchanting sound of Galatea's final aria, maintained in a pastoral mood, brings solace and faith in the invincible power of love.
