The last opera on the bill at the 84th Maggio Musicale Festival and this too has never been performed at the Maggio and in Florence. The direction is entrusted to Federico Maria Sardelli, the direction to Benjamin Lazar. Sets are by Adeline Caron, costumes by Alain Naillet, choreography is by Gudrun Skamletz. Acis et Galatée , an opera in three acts plus a prologue to a libretto by Jean Galbert de Campistron, is the last completed work by Jean-Baptiste Lully . After decades dedicated to the tragédie lyrique , a genre he himself had inaugurated, in 1686 Lully concluded his long theatrical career with a pastorale-h éro ï quand, an intermediate genre that combined divine and mortal characters, nobles and shepherds on the stage, commissioned by the Duke of Vend ôme to pay homage to the Dauphin or of France, a guest in the castle of Anet. The libretto is inspired by the legend of Acis and Galatea described in book XIII of Ovid's Metamorphoses . The shepherd Acis loves the water nymph Galatea in return , but the monstrous cyclops Polyphemus also loves the nymph and seeing himself rejected, he kills Acis out of jealousy, crushing him under a rock. However, thanks to the intervention of the god Neptune, Aci will bebrought back to life and transformed into a river. While experimenting with a minor genre, which is articulated in only three acts compared to the canonical five of the trag édies lyriques and provides for a smaller number of musical numbers, Lully does not renounce the courtly tone that characterizes all of his major productions. In Acis et Galatée the declamation is always extremely accurate and attentive to every inflection of the verse as well as the music, which has the same sumptuous and imposing tones as the great trag é dies . For these reasons, the work received the applause of the public right from the start, entering by right the history of French musical theatre.

Ultima opera in cartellone dell’84 esimo Festival del Maggio Musicale e anche questa mai rappresentata al Maggio e a Firenze. La direzione è affidata a Federico Maria Sardelli, la regia a Benjamin Lazar. Le scene sono di Adeline Caron, i costumi di Alain Naillet, la coreografia è di Gudrun Skamletz. Acis et Galatée, opera in tre atti più prologo su libretto di Jean Galbert de Campistron, è l’ultimo lavoro compiuto di Jean-Baptiste Lully. Dopo decenni dedicati alla tragédie lyrique, genere da lui stesso inaugurato, nel 1686 Lully concludeva la sua lunga carriera teatrale con una pastorale-héroïque, un genere intermedio che combinava sulla scena personaggi divini e mortali, nobili e pastori, commissionatagli dal duca di Vendôme per omaggiare il Delfino di Francia ospite nel castello di Anet. ll libretto è ispirato alla leggenda di Aci e Galatea descritta nel libro XIII delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio. Il pastore Aci ama, ricambiato, la ninfa delle acque Galatea, ma anche il mostruoso ciclope Polifemo ama la ninfa e vedendosi respinto uccide per gelosia Aci, schiacciandolo sotto una roccia. Tuttavia, grazie all’intervento del dio Nettuno, Aci sarà riportato in vita e trasformato in un fiume. Pur cimentandosi con un genere minore, che si articola in soli tre atti rispetto ai canonici cinque delle tragédies lyriques e prevede un numero inferiore di numeri musicali, Lully non rinuncia al tono aulico che caratterizza tutta la sua produzione maggiore. In Acis et Galatée la declamazione è sempre estremamente curata e attenta a ogni inflessione del verso così come la musica, che possiede i medesimi toni sontuosi e imponenti delle grandi tragédies. Per tali ragioni l’opera riscosse fin dall’esordio il plauso del pubblico, entrando di diritto della storia del teatro musicale francese
