A baroque concert without violins? This is very rare at the Freiburg Baroque Consort . The dark, velvety timbre of violas and viols is extremely attractive and ideal for the Passion. Sometimes composers from the 17th and 18th centuries made use of this line-up when it came to gestures of mourning and lamentations, as also JS Bach in his two cantatas God's time is the very best time and equal to the rain and snow falling from the sky or Dietrich Buxtehude in his Membra Jesu Nostri. The line-up in the 6th Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1051 remains curious, however. It has not yet been possible to clarify with absolute certainty why Bach completely refrained from using violins in this concerto, which was completely unusual in purely instrumental music for its time.
