Aida occupies a special position even in Giuseppe Verdi's work. It is the epitome of opera par excellence: characters, conflicts, passions, places of longing - all of this comes about thanks to the music and the singing voice. The Egypt to which Verdi takes us is an archaic world of rituals, strict rules and strong emotions. The priests rule unshakably over the fate of the people, and yet their passions erupt almost indomitable. The general Radamès was appointed for the pharaoh's daughter Amneris, but no power in the world can dissuade him from his love for the Ethiopian slave Aida. She entangles him and others in insoluble conflicts between their duties and their desires. No opera by Verdi ends so tragically and yet with such a complete victory of love as this one.

Aida - that is a martial triumphal march as well as delicate cantilena or the enchanting final song. First performed in Cairo in 1871, the opera is based on a scene design by the influential Egyptologist Auguste Mariette instead of a drama from world literature, who shaped the image of the mythical land on the Nile like no other in Europe. Verdi didn't need more to create an opera based solely on a musical-dramatic idea and perfect effect. Director Jasmina Hadžiahmetović is directing for the first time at the STAATSTHEATER.
