One of the greatest ironies of grand opera – the total spectacle of early Romanticism – is that its legacy has come down to us mainly through foreign surrogates such as Aida, whose Cairo premiere in 1871 was surrounded by all the paraphernalia reserved for the great geopolitical conclaves. Far from giving in to the vulgar trickery characteristic of this genre, this masterpiece and turning point in Verdi's production turned the massive scenes into an integral part of the drama –and not a mere spectacle– and infused its creatures with a fire that reaches solar temperatures in their last act, before melting into a loving embrace of resignation and oblivion.

Any production that claims to live up to this work must overcome no less thorny challenges: that the drama shines above the show and that the passions give off their fiery brilliance without burning in the morbid flames of the feuilleton. Almost a quarter of a century after its premiere in 1998, these are precisely the keys that explain the validity of this historic production by Hugo de Ana in an updated revival to demonstrate once again –forgive the redundancy– its perennial relevance.
