A spectacular opera
Commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Ismaïl Pasha, from Giuseppe Verdi in 1869, on the occasion of the construction of the Suez Canal, Aïda will be represented for the first time at the Cairo Theater, built for the occasion, on December 24 1871. The European creation of the opera will take place on February 8, 1872 at La Scala in Milan. Since then Aïda has been performed hundreds of times around the world.

The idea for this grand spectacle opera was born in the fertile brain of the great French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, who also designed the sets and costumes. Antonio Ghislanzoni wrote the libretto and Verdi the music.
