To this day one can hardly escape the magic of the exotic island world full of passion and fantasy and the touching and brilliant music, in which George Frideric Handel masterfully succeeds in fathoming the conflicting feelings of the characters.

"Alcina" is Handel's opera that leaves the deepest impression, outlines all the characters with a precise stroke, brings them to life and touches us with it. Not for the first time, Handel makes us sympathize with a beautiful, powerful, yet unfortunate sorceress whose arts fail when her lover abandons her. Alcina belongs to the series of his earlier magical heroines, but reaches a tragic and dramatic depth that only Verdi and Puccini are likely to have regained.

The sorceress Alcina lures men to her island in order to seduce them. Once she gets tired of them, she transforms them into animals, stones or plants. Then the unbelievable happens: she falls in love with the brave warrior Ruggiero, whom she binds to him with her magical powers. For the first time she feels the happiness of love, but also the fear of losing her loved one. When Ruggiero's fiancée, Bradamante, arrives on the magic island to free her lover, Alcina's magic kingdom is threatened with destruction...
