An American evening proposing two operatic pearls by longtime companion composers Italian/American  Gian-Carlo Menotti and American Samuel Barber. After the remarkable success of Menotti’s Medium production in its last edition, Operafest Lisboa committed to revealing more about this fascinating composer, presents in national premiere Labyrinth (1963). Created to be exclusively presented in cinema or tv format, this intriguing opera - an operatic riddle as the composer himself called it, evokes the labyrinth of life and of destiny and its unexpected paths to unravel. The promised happiness is devoured by life’s obstacles and disenchantments in a story about a fresh married couple lost in a hotel corridor who can't find the key to their room. Searching for help, they meet all these bizarre characters who manipulate them without giving the so desired answer, until the tragic ending. A symbolic evocation of human existential questions still waiting for an answer and the path to the unknown that life itself represents.
 
The second operatic dish of the evening, the jazzistic brief opera A Hand of Bridge, is after all a pretext to unravel our feelings and occult desires with which, we permanently live, during an apparent hand of bridge between two couples.

Propõe-se uma noite americana com duas pérolas operáticas do compositor italo-americano Gian-Carlo Menotti e do compositor americano Samuel Barber, companheiros de longa data. Em estreia nacional "Labirinto" de Gian-Carlo Menotti. Depois do êxito da sua ópera A Médium, na edição anterior, Operafest Lisboa dedica-se a dar a conhecer mais sobre este compositor fascinante. Composta para ser exclusivamente apresentada em formato televisivo, esta ópera intrigante – uma adivinha operática como lhe chama o próprio compositor,  evoca o labirinto da vida e do destino, com caminhos inesperados por desvendar. A prometida felicidade devorada pelos obstáculos e desencantos da vida, uma história de um casal, acabado de casar, que não encontra a chave do quarto do hotel em que se encontra, procurando ajuda junto de personagens que habitam o hotel e que os manipulam sem lhes darem a tão ansiada resposta, até ao fim inesperado. Uma evocação quase metafísica das perguntas que ficam por responder, ao longo da existência humana e do caminho desconhecido que é a própria vida.
 
E ainda a breve ópera de toque jazzístico de Samuel Barber, a partir do libreto do próprio Gian-Carlo Menotti Uma Partida de Bridge que é afinal o pretexto para a revelação dos sentimentos e desejos internos ocultos com que todos permanentemente vivemos, num aparente jogo de bridge entre dois casais.
