Scarlatti and Berio, Schubert and Widmann:
A dialogue between historical and contemporary composers

Luciano Berio's references to Scarlatti and Jörg Widmann's homage to Schubert are contrasted by Andrea Lucchesini with original works of the two earlier composers, weaving both original and reference into a new whole. Prominent modern-day composers cultivate a relationship with historical compositional styles, bringing to light innovations and divergences as well as a continuation of and indebtedness to the past.

Berio and Widmann are both closely involved with this new recording: Lucchesini and Berio enjoyed a close personal relationship during the composer's lifetime, while Jörg Widmann wrote a text for the new production and is also connected to Andrea Lucchesini.

Andrea Lucchesini is one of the leading Italian pianists of our day. His triumph at the Dino Ciani International Competition at a young age marked the beginning of his international concert career. He has since performed all over the world with leading orchestras under renowned conductors as well as in solo recitals. His primary interest lies in contemporary music. Berio's Echoing Curves was premiered by Lucchesini, and he was also involved in the composition of the Sonata, Berio's last work for solo piano. Since 1990 the pianist has increasingly devoted himself to chamber music as well, performing in many different instrumental combinations and particularly in close collaboration with the cellist Mario Brunello and the Quartetto di Cremona.

Formatosi alla grande scuola pianistica di Maria Tipo, Andrea Lucchesini inizia giovanissimo un’intensa carriera solistica. È il primo e unico artista italiano a ricevere il Premio Internazionale Accademia Chigiana, mentre la critica italiana gli assegna il Premio F. Abbiati.
Suona in tutto il mondo con orchestre prestigiose e i più grandi direttori. Appassionato camerista, collabora regolarmente con artisti di grande prestigio. Ha inciso per Emi, Teldec, BMG e Agorà; gli otto cd live delle 32 Sonate di Beethoven (Stradivarius) e l’integrale delle opere per pianoforte solo di Luciano Berio per Avie Records hanno ricevuto importanti riconoscimenti dalla critica internazionale.
Si dedica con passione all’insegnamento presso la Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, di cui è stato direttore artistico dal 2008 al 2016; regolarmente invitato a tenere masterclass presso prestigiose istituzioni musicali europee, tra cui il Mozarteum di Salisburgo, partecipa come giurato ai più importanti concorsi pianistici. Nel 2017 ha ideato per gli Amici della Musica di Firenze il progetto artistico fff Fortissimissimo Firenze Festival, con l’obiettivo di dare spazio ai giovani talenti italiani. Nello stesso anno è stato nominato direttore artistico dell’Accademia Filarmonica Romana.

Sandro Cappelletto è nato a Venezia. Scrittore e storico della musica, ha pubblicato, tra gli altri, una biografia di Beethoven (Newton Compton 1986), un’analisi della Turandot (Gremese 1988), la prima biografi a critica di Farinelli (La voce perduta, EDT 1995), un’inchiesta sugli Enti Lirici (Farò grande questo teatro!, EDT 1996) e il saggio Inventare la scena per la Storia del Teatro (Einaudi 2001). Autore di testi teatrali e per il teatro musicale, di programmi radiofonici e televisivi, fa parte della commissione artistica della Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. Giornalista professionista, collabora con La Stampa e Le Monde. Su invito di Giuseppe Sinopoli, ha diretto il settore drammaturgia e didattica del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Accademico dell’Accademia Filarmonica Romana, ne è stato direttore artistico dal 2009 al 2013. Dirige la rivista Studi verdiani. È Accademico di Santa Cecilia.

Trained at the great piano school of Maria Tipo, Andrea Lucchesini began an intense solo career at a very young age. He is the first and only Italian artist to receive the Accademia Chigiana International Prize, while the Italian critics assign him the F. Abbiati Prize.
He plays all over the world with prestigious orchestras and the greatest conductors. A passionate chamber musician, he regularly collaborates with highly prestigious artists. He has recorded for Emi, Teldec, BMG and Agorà; the eight live CDs of Beethoven's 32 Sonatas (Stradivarius) and the complete works for solo piano by Luciano Berio for Avie Records have received important acknowledgments from international critics.
He is passionately dedicated to teaching at the Fiesole School of Music, of which he was artistic director from 2008 to 2016; regularly invited to hold masterclasses at prestigious European musical institutions, including the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he participates as a juror in the most important piano competitions. In 2017 he created the artistic project fff Fortissimissimo Firenze Festival for the Friends of Music of Florence , with the aim of giving space to young Italian talents.
