Olga Borodina is a singer with character. Conductors, directors, stage partners, concert agents, the audience in the hall know this. She chooses the repertoire herself, if the production is not liked, she will not take part in the performance. The appearance of the name of Borodina on the poster is a guarantee that there will be a full house, and after a concert or performance, listeners will willingly share their impressions orally and in writing. The character of the singer is heard in every phrase and, multiplied by the magical beauty of the timbre and impeccable vocal skills, is remembered for a long time. Borodina is demanding of herself: every note is made in her, the slightest nuance of the role is thought out. And she knows how to surprise: she can sing an aria for soprano as an encore, or a song by Alexandra Pakhmutova, or a number from the repertoire of Lyudmila Zykina, as if proving that any genre is subject to her.
The program of the anniversary concert dedicated to the 35th anniversary of performances on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater included works by Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky. With Mussorgsky's music on her lips, Borodina became famous. It was her Marfa from Khovanshchina (debut on February 23, 1989) that made the recent graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory one of the leading soloists of the troupe. Just as confidently, Borodina announced herself in the role of the imperious and seductive Marina Mnishek in April 1990, when Boris Godunov by Andrei Tarkovsky was transferred to the Leningrad stage from Covent Garden. The role of the Countess, on the contrary, is one of the last in her repertoire, in the role of the “old witch” Borodin appeared in Alexei Stepanyuk’s performance in June 2021. Ольга Бородина – певица с характером. Это знают дирижеры, режиссеры, партнеры по сцене, концертные агенты, публика в зале. Репертуар выбирает сама, если не понравится постановка, принимать участие в спектакле не будет. Появление имени Бородиной на афише – гарантия того, что будет аншлаг, а после концерта или спектакля слушатели охотно будут делиться впечатлениями устно и письменно. Характер певицы слышен в каждой фразе и, помноженный на колдовской красоты тембр и безупречное вокальное мастерство, запоминается надолго. Бородина требовательна к себе: у нее сделана каждая нота, продуман малейший нюанс роли. И она умеет удивлять: может спеть на бис арию для сопрано, или песню Александры Пахмутовой, или номер из репертуара Людмилы Зыкиной, словно доказывая, что ей подвластны любые жанры.
Программу юбилейного концерта к 35-летию выступлений на сцене Мариинского театра составили произведения Мусоргского и Чайковского. С музыкой Мусоргского на устах Бородина стала знаменитой. Именно ее Марфа из «Хованщины» (дебют 23 февраля 1989 года) сделала недавнюю выпускницу Ленинградской консерватории одной из ведущих солисток труппы. Так же уверенно Бородина заявила о себе и в роли властной и обольстительной Марины Мнишек в апреле 1990-го, когда на ленинградскую сцену перенесли из Ковент-Гардена «Бориса Годунова» Андрея Тарковского. Партия Графини, наоборот, одна из последних в ее репертуаре, в роли «старой ведьмы» Бородина вышла в спектакле Алексея Степанюка в июне 2021 года. Исполняя Графиню в Венской опере, певица заслужила восторженные отзывы критиков: «Поначалу создав образ жестокой и властной, укутанной в меха пожилой русской графини, Бородина исполнила ее проникновенный куплет пианиссимо с внутренним напряжением, найдя для его нижних нот завораживающие своим полнозвучием краски» (Die Presse); «Ольга Бородина, гранд-дама русской оперы, раскрывает в песне из оперы “Ричард Львиное Сердце” Гретри тонкую и меланхоличную поэтичность» (Kronen Zeitung); «Ольга Бородина c ее изысканной культурой исполнения пиано превратила ариетту Графини в элегическую траурную песнь» (Kleine Zeitung Kärnten).
