Mahler was already striving for the larger form with his second symphony: he significantly expanded the scope and the orchestration and included solo singers and the choir. Programmatically, Mahler's thoughts revolve around the religious-existential theme of death as the end of earthly life and the beginning of contemplation into divine eternity. It was not without reason that the symphony was later given the name »Resurrection Symphony«.

Bereits mit seiner zweiten Sinfonie strebte Mahler nach der Großform: Er erweiterte deutlich den Umfang und die Orchesterbesetzung und band Gesangssolistinnen und Chor mit ein. Programmatisch kreisen die Gedanken Mahlers um das religiös-existenzielle Thema des Todes als Ende des irdischen Lebens und Beginn der Einkehr in die göttliche Ewigkeit. Nicht grundlos erhielt die Sinfonie später den Namen »Auferstehungssinfonie«.
