The annual performance of a Bach Passion is always a highlight of the Festival de Pâques in beautiful Aix-en-Provence, and in 2024 it's the fiercely dramatic and intense St John Passion, first heard 300 years ago this year. Renowned Baroque specialist Andrea Marcon directs a performance with the La Cetra Barockorchester Basel and the Le Cetra Vocal Ensemble and featuring an outstanding line-up of soloists in what promises to a musical highlight for Good Friday.

Am Karfreitag 1724 wurde in Leipzig Bachs Johannes-Passion uraufgeführt, das heisst, genau 300 Jahre vor unserer Aufführung! Anlässlich dieses Jubiläums beschäftigt sich La Cetra gerne wieder mit diesem vielschichtigen Werk. Gleichzeitig gehört Bach neben Vivaldi, Monteverdi und Händel natürlich zu den grossen Säulen im Repertoire unserer Ensembles und des künstlerischen Leiters Andrea Marcon. Die h-moll Messe, zum Beispiel, nimmt La Cetra im Herbst 2023 auf CD auf, zur selben Zeit wird auch die neueste CD, «A Tribute to Bach», mit Maurice Steger veröffentlicht.
Zu den bedeutenden Werken von Kunst, Literatur und Musik sollte man alle paar Jahre zurückkehren, denn ihre Grösse besteht nicht zuletzt darin, dass sie jedesmal in anderem Licht erscheinen. Je nach Lebenskontext, in dem wir uns gerade befinden, entdecken wir einen jeweils neuen Sinn. Formal, von den musikalischen Anforderungen und der ungewöhnlichen Tonsprache her wird die Johannes-Passion zudem für experimenteller und noch aufregender als die Matthäus-Passion gehalten. Spannend wird in unserem Konzert die Interpretation des Schweizer Tenors Jakob Pilgram, der uns als Evangelist durch die letzten Tage in Christi Leben begleitet. Die weiteren solistischen Partien interpretiert ein hervorragendes Solistenensemble mit Christian Wagner, Mirko Ludwig, Sara Mingardo und Shira Patchornik, an deren fulminantes Einspringen in Vivaldis «Giustino» im Februar 2023 man mit Begeisterung zurückdenkt.

On Good Friday 1724, Bach’s St John Passion was premiered in Leipzig, i.e. exactly 300 years before our performance! On the occasion of this anniversary, La Cetra is happy to deal with this multi-layered work again. At the same time, Bach is of course one of the great pillars in the repertoire of our ensembles and artistic director Andrea Marcon, alongside Vivaldi, Monteverdi and Handel. The B minor Mass, for example, will be recorded by La Cetra on CD in autumn 2023, at the same time as the latest CD, “A Tribute to Bach”, with Maurice Steger will be released.
One should return to the important works of art, literature and music every few years, for their greatness consists not least in the fact that they appear in a different light each time. Depending on the context of life in which we find ourselves at the time, we discover a new meaning each time. In terms of form, musical demands and unusual tonal language, the St John Passion is also considered more experimental and even more exciting than the St Matthew Passion. In our concert, the interpretation of the Swiss tenor Jakob Pilgram, who accompanies us as the Evangelist through the last days of Christ’s life, will be exciting. The other solo parts will be interpreted by an outstanding ensemble of soloists including Christian Wagner, Mirko Ludwig, Sara Mingardo and Shira Patchornik, whose brilliant entry in Vivaldi’s “Giustino” in February 2023 will be remembered with enthusiasm.
