Jumalattaret« is the tongue-twister title of a song cycle John Zorn composed for the virtuosic soprano Barbara Hannigan in 2017. The piece is based on (whispered) text fragments from the »Kalevala«, Finland’s national epic. Besides Hannigan’s unique range of expression, the extreme female figures from the »Kalevala«, who do not fear violence and who know no human or natural limits to what they can do, may also have emboldened Zorn to demand what others would deem unsingable from the vocalist. The cycle is accompanied by what is also a treacherously difficult piano part, performed by Stephen Gosling. Also on the singer’s programme: »Song of Songs«, a captivating composition for a-cappella female voices based on the Song of Solomon, and »Pandora’s Box«, which Barbara Hannigan is performing with the JACK Quartet.
