Jacques Offenbach is a master of the operetta. And he knew how to give it his very own, biting, satirical and mocking character. While others in mid-19th century Paris reveled in pomp and grandeur, in wealth and courtesy, Offenbach held up the mirror to the society of his time in a most entertaining way - you could hardly stop laughing and forget that you were probably made fun of himself.

Bluebeard has just been widowed for the fifth time. Now he's looking for a new one. His gaze falls on the self-confident farmer Boulotte. But she loves someone completely different, a shepherd who (of course) is actually of the highest nobility. He in turn loves another.
