Beatrice of Tenda is staged at the Teatro La Fenice on March 16, 1833, with Giuditta Pasta, Giovanni Orazio Cartagenova, Anna Del Sere, Alberico Curioni. The libretto is by Felice Romani (taken from the play of the same name by Carlo Tedaldi Fores of 1825) and is inspired by a real event that took place in 1418 near Milan. The work was marked by not a few discussions between the musician from Catania and the Ligurian poet: the latter in fact delivered the libretto very late and Bellini blamed him for the lack of success of the work, severing their working partnership. The absolute protagonist is Beatrice - often compared to the Donizettian queens but in reality very different from them - an unhappy wife, aware of the inevitability of the fate that condemns her to an earthly but peaceful death of celestial peace.
