Hector Berlioz's love of experimentation when it came to treading new musical paths never found the appropriate response during his lifetime, especially in the case of his music theater works. Premiered in August 1862 on the occasion of the opening of the New Theater in Baden-Baden, »Béatrice and Bénédict« was only granted a cool shot. Quite apart from the inspired overture, this score is characterized by a large number of valuable musical parts and is - analogous to Shakespeare's text - witty and funny in such a subtle way that many connoisseurs today regard it as an extension of the genre of the opéra-comique is taken.

In autumn 2015, François-Xavier Roth made his sparkling debut as General Music Director of the Cologne Opera with Hector Berlioz' »Benvenuto Cellini« in the newly opened StaatseHaus interim venue. With the new production of »Béatrice et Bénédict«, the focus on Berlioz as an opera composer continues.
