Beethoven was already a legend during his lifetime. So people were all the more excited about a symphony that he was said to be working on, which was said to be superior to anything that had previously existed. In fact, Beethoven worked on his Ninth for many years, and in many respects it actually blew up any form. Not least with its monumental last movement, the setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy". Many are even only familiar with this sentence, as it began to lead a life of its own in 1985 as the official anthem of the EU. Principal conductor Marek Janowski recorded it for Deutschlandfunk in 2007, where it has been heard every day shortly before midnight ever since. For many, however, the Ninth Symphony simply belongs to New Year's Eve. And so it is also with us a festive end of the year and a hopeful look into the new year in one…

Beethoven war bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten eine Legende. Umso gespannter war man auf eine angeblich alles bisher Dagewesene überragende Sinfonie, an der er angeblich arbeitete. Tatsächlich beschäftigte Beethoven sich viele Jahre mit seiner Neunten, und tatsächlich sprengte sie in mancher Hinsicht jede Form. Nicht zuletzt mit ihrem monumentalen letzten Satz, der Vertonung von Schillers "Ode an die Freude". Vielen ist sogar nur dieser Satz bekannt, begann er doch 1985 als offizielle Hymne der EU ein Eigenleben zu führen. Chefdirigent Marek Janowski hat sie 2007 für den Deutschlandfunk eingespielt, wo sie seitdem täglich kurz vor Mitternacht zu hören ist.
