Konzert mit Vorgeschichte: Eigentlich wollten der Mainzer Bachchor und das Bachorchester den Abschluss des Beethoven-Jubiläumsjahres in der Alten Oper mit der Missa Solemnis feiern. Das Jahr 2020 stand dann jedoch unter einem anderen Motto als Beethoven … Mit einer der Pandemie geschuldeten Verspätung von drei Jahren holen Bachchor und Bachorchester nun unter der Leitung von Ralf Otto endlich ihren Geburtstagsbeitrag nach und widmen sich dabei einem Hauptwerk der geistlichen Musikgeschichte. Dass Beethovens gewichtige Missa Solemnis aber nicht nur in der Kirche, sondern längst auch im Konzertsaal ihren festen Platz hat, liegt an der sinfonischen Prägung des Werks. Schließlich seien die „Gesangsstimmen ganz wie menschliche Instrumente behandelt“, befand bereits Richard Wagner.

Concert with history: the Mainz Bach Choir and the Bach Orchestra actually wanted to celebrate the end of the Beethoven anniversary year in the Alte Oper with the Missa Solemnis. The year 2020, however, had a different motto than Beethoven ... With a delay of three years due to the pandemic, the Bach Choir and Bach Orchestra are now finally catching up on their birthday contribution under the direction of Ralf Otto and are devoting themselves to a major work of sacred music history. The fact that Beethoven's weighty Missa Solemnis has a permanent place not only in the church but also in the concert hall is due to the symphonic nature of the work. After all, the "singing voices are treated just like human instruments," said Richard Wagner.
