Richard Wagner bowed to no artist but Ludwig van Beethoven – in fact, friends once witnessed him dancing along to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.

Beethoven, meanwhile, listened to a Mozart piano concerto and remarked that ‘we shall never be able to do anything like that’.
