The young Candide grew up with Cunegonde and Maximilian, the two teenage children of his uncle, Baron Thunder-ten-tronckh, in a sheltered place at his castle in Westphalia. From their common tutor, the philosopher Dr. Pangloss, the three, along with the maid Paquette, are taught to believe they live in the "best of all possible worlds." Finally cast out by his family and forced to venture out into the wide world, Candide embarks on a journey that will see him fall victim to natural disasters, witness political and religious strife, abuse, betrayal, and terminal illnesses—but none of that can dissuade him from clinging to his unshakable optimism about the "best of all worlds."

Leonard Bernstein took the philosophical-satirical novel »Candide oder der Optimismus« by the French Enlightener Voltaire from 1759 as a template for his »Comic Operetta« in two acts, which was first performed on December 1, 1956 on New York's Broadway. As a result, the composer revised his work several times with the help of various authors. Inspired by Voltaire's biting, socially critical irony, Bernstein created music for what is probably his best-known stage work alongside »West Side Story«, which, in its captivating mixture of operetta, musical and revue, is at the same time – as the composer himself once put it – a »declaration of love to the European music« that quotes European dance forms such as gavotte, mazurka or polka as well as traditions of Italian bel canto opera.
