Leonard Bernstein's Operetta Candide is not a moralizing treatise, but an ironic and funny story that appeals to everyone. Bernstein's work, inspired by the philosophical tale of Voltaire, has undergone numerous modifications in order to appear in the minds of the audience. Various versions of the libretto and changes in the score meant that several varieties of the work traveled from the States to Europe.

This allegorical story about a journey in search of "the best of worlds" and an attempt to understand it poses difficult but important questions for the reader and viewer. Leonard Bernstein, composer of symphonic, chamber, ballet and film music and creator of Broadway musicals, worked simultaneously on Candide and the West Side Story , but this work based on the French prototype of Voltaire was released sooner.

In the production of Anna Wieczur (director) and Ewa Gdowiok (set design and costumes) we will move to the classic world, full of old engravings and sea journeys, but we will also focus on universal issues of Candide - what is the meaning of our life, is there more good or bad in us? what are our motivations? José Maria Florêncio is the musical director of the premiere. The performance uses photos of objects from the collections of the National Museum in Gdańsk.

Operetkowy Kandyd Leonarda Bernsteina to nie moralizatorski traktat, a ironiczna i zabawna historia przemawiająca do wszystkich. Dzieło Bernsteina, inspirowane powiastką filozoficzną Voltaire’a, przeszło liczne modyfikacje, aby zaistnieć w świadomości odbiorców. Różne wersje libretta oraz zmiany w partyturze spowodowały, że od Stanów do Europy wędrowało kilka odmian dzieła.

Ta alegoryczna opowieść o wędrówce w poszukiwaniu „najlepszego ze światów” i próbie jego zrozumienia stawia przed czytelnikiem i widzem trudne, lecz ważne pytania. Leonard Bernstein, kompozytor muzyki symfonicznej, kameralnej, baletowej, filmowej oraz twórca musicali dla Broadwayu, pracował równolegle nad Kandydem i West Side Story, ale to dzieło bazujące na francuskim pierwowzorze Woltera szybciej doczekało się premiery.

W realizacji Anny Wieczur (reżyseria) oraz Ewy Gdowiok (scenografia i kostiumy) przeniesiemy się do klasycznego świata, pełnego starych rycin oraz morskich podróży, ale też skupimy się na uniwersalnych zagadnieniach Kandyda – jaki jest sens naszego życia, czy więcej w nas dobra czy zła, jakimi motywacjami się kierujemy? Kierownikiem muzycznym premiery jest José Maria Florêncio. W spektaklu wykorzystano zdjęcia obiektów pochodzących ze zbiorów Muzeum Narodowego w Gdańsku.
