Eine tragisch endende Opéra comique, die das ewige Spiel von leidenschaftlicher Liebe und quälender Eifersucht auf die Bühne bringt, und deren zündende Musik das Publikum weltweit angesprochen hat und immer wieder neu anspricht, das ist Bizets »Carmen«. Wechselseitige Anziehungs- und Abstoßungskräfte wirken, mit letztlich fatalen Folgen – getragen und verantwortet von eigenwilligen, in Erinnerung bleibenden Charakteren.

Den Erfolg seiner im Frühjahr 1875 in Paris uraufgeführten »Carmen« konnte das Jahrhunderttalent Georges Bizet allenfalls ahnen, aber nicht mehr genießen. Als seine Oper zum 33. Mal aufgeführt wurde, starb er im Alter von erst 38 Jahren. Heute gehört »Carmen« zu den meistgespielten Stücken des Repertoires überhaupt, ein Ende des enthusiastischen Echos ist nicht in Sicht. Nicht wenige Musiknummern sind zu wahren »Hits« geworden, das südliche Klangkolorit und die leuchtenden Orchesterfarben, die etwas sehr Sinnliches ausstrahlen, schaffen zusätzliche Reize. Raffiniert gemacht ist diese Musik, die so stimmig mit dem dramatischen Geschehen zusammentrifft, und dabei doch so eingängig, im guten Sinne »populär«. Jede der Figuren erhält ihr eigenes musikalisches Profil – lebensechte Menschen kommen auf die Bühne, in quasi-realistischer Art, was die Glaubwürdigkeit ihres Singens und Handelns unterstützt. Bizets »Carmen« ist eines der erklärten Meisterwerke der Opernliteratur.

A tragically ending opéra comique that brings the eternal play of passionate love and tormenting jealousy to the stage, and whose sparkling music has appealed to audiences worldwide and continues to appeal to new ones, that is Bizet's »Carmen«. Reciprocal forces of attraction and repulsion are at work, with ultimately fatal consequences – carried and taken care of by idiosyncratic, memorable characters.

The talent of the century Georges Bizet could at best guess at the success of his »Carmen«, which premiered in Paris in the spring of 1875, but could no longer enjoy it. When his opera was performed for the 33rd time, he died at the age of only 38. Today »Carmen« is one of the most played pieces in the repertoire, and there is no end in sight to the enthusiastic response. Quite a few musical numbers have become true "hits", the southern sound color and the bright orchestral colors, which radiate something very sensual, create additional charm. This music is ingeniously made, coming together so coherently with the dramatic events, and yet so catchy, "popular" in a good sense. Each of the characters gets their own musical profile - lifelike people come on stage in a quasi-realistic way, which supports the credibility of their singing and acting. Bizet's »Carmen« is one of the declared masterpieces of operatic literature.
