The plot of "Carmen" is taken from the short story by Prosper Merimee, but its content has undergone significant changes. Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy developed the libretto, saturating it with drama, deepening the emotional contrasts, creating new images of the characters, in many respects different from their prototypes. At the center of the cycle of events is a beautiful, passionate and freedom-loving gypsy. The music of the opera, full of life and light, vividly affirms the freedom of the human person. The national flavor and atmosphere of the drama are recreated with great skill. The strength of Carmen's optimism lies in the inseparable inner connection between the heroes and the people.

This is the last opera by Georges Bizet, and it has passed a thorny path to fame and the stages of world theaters. The first production of Carmen, oddly enough, ended in complete failure. The audience was not ready for such realism on stage and the newspapers accused the composer of immorality. However, it was the negative reviews that made Carmen immensely popular. To a large extent, the return of the opera to the Parisian stage was facilitated by triumphant tours in Europe, Russia and America. Pyotr Tchaikovsky wrote: “Bizet’s opera is a masterpiece, one of those few things that are destined to reflect the musical aspirations of an entire era to the strongest degree. In ten years, Carmen will be the most popular opera in the world…”. And so it happened - after a century and a half, Carmen is invariably present in the top 10 most performed operas on the planet.

During the 20th century, ten productions of Carmen have changed in Samara. This performance is already the eleventh. Particularly noteworthy was the 1984 performance directed by Zemfira Tsalikova, the first female musical theater director from North Ossetia. Her "Carmen" stayed in the repertoire for 27 seasons, and two directors of our theater managed to sing in it: tenors William Semashko and Alexander Sibirtsev went on stage in this production as Jose.

Stage director Georgy Isahakyan warned before the premiere: “We will start, as in the story of Merimee, from the memories of Jose on death row - we make this idea the main one for our story. It always seemed to me that Carmen seems to be for everyone, but in fact she is always alone and for herself. Spain, of course, penetrates the performance, but it goes in a very refined and cultural way. And in this sense, we certainly have a connection between the 19th century and the 21st.”
