Premiera Carmen Georges'a Bizeta miała miejsce w paryskiej Opera-Comique 3 marca 1875 roku, a świadkami jej scenicznych narodzin stali się najważniejsi kompozytorzy tamtych czasów, m.in.: Léo Delibes, Charles Gounod, Jules Massenet, Ambroise Thomas czy Jacques Offenbach.

Dzieło, które podczas prapremiery poniosło legendarną porażkę, dziś jest w repertuarze niemalże każdego teatru operowego na świecie. Genialny kunszt kompozytorski Bizeta oraz dramaturgiczna konstrukcja libretta, oparta na słynnej noweli Prospera Mérimée o tym samym tytule, stały się ponadczasowym dziełem. Pomiędzy robotnicą fabryki cygar, od imienia której opera Bizeta wzięła swój tytuł, a młodym żołnierzem Don José, rodzi się płomienne uczucie, którego ogień w swej istocie pochłonie główną bohaterkę. Historię tę można streścić w kilku słowach - miłość, pożądanie, zazdrość, śmierć...

The premiere of Georges Bizet's Carmen took place at the Opera-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, and its stage birth was witnessed by the most important composers of that time, including: Léo Delibes, Charles Gounod, Jules Massenet, Ambroise Thomas and Jacques Offenbach.

The work, which was a legendary failure during its premiere, is now in the repertoire of almost every opera theater in the world. Bizet's brilliant compositional skill and the dramatic structure of the libretto, based on the famous novella of the same title by Prospero Mérimée, have become a timeless work. A fiery feeling is born between the cigar factory worker, from whose name Bizet's opera takes its title, and the young soldier Don José, the fire of which will ultimately consume the main character. This story can be summarized in a few words - love, lust, jealousy, death...
