Romania’s Edward Clug revisits Carmina Burana, the major 20th century work by German composer Carl Orff. Inspired by medieval verse, the piece opens with its famous theme O Fortuna. Carmina Burana centres on human beings in their most visceral dimension: legacy and longevity. Clug’s vivid staging brings to life a wheel of fortune that captivates the dancers. It evokes both the cyclical nature of life and the idea of predestiny. Alongside its implicit theme of torment, Carmina Burana also explores the themes of springtime, hope and love as told in medieval writing.

Jeunehomme by Uwe Scholz will complete this double bill. On the notes of Mozart’s concerto, the belated German choreographer pays homage to the beauty as well as the melancholy of the great composer’s works.

Avec Carmina Burana, Edward Clug revisite une œuvre majeure du XXe siècle du compositeur allemand Carl Orff. Inspirée de poèmes médiévaux, la cantate est introduite par le célèbre thème O Fortuna. L’œuvre rejoint l’être humain dans sa dimension la plus viscérale : celle de son legs et de sa pérennité. À travers une mise en scène saisissante, le chorégraphe roumain matérialise une roue de fortune qui magnétise les danseurs. Elle présente à la fois l’aspect cyclique de la vie et l’idée d’un sort prédéterminé. Apparaît alors le tourment en filigrane de Carmina Burana, mais aussi les thèmes du printemps, de l’espoir et de l’amour que racontent les écrits du Moyen-Âge.

La pièce Jeunehomme d’Uwe Scholz complètera ce programme double. Sur les notes du concerto de Mozart, le regretté chorégraphe allemand rend hommage tant à l’allégresse qu’à la mélancolie des œuvres du grand compositeur.
