The St. John Passion is the first passion oratorio composed by Bach when he was appointed cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. This work was performed for the first time in the same place, during Vespers on Good Friday 1724. The composer was then thirty-eight years old. The passion evokes in music the suffering and death of Christ, and this first passion of Bach remains unequalled. The intensity of the very intimate Passion according to Saint-Jean has absolutely nothing to envy to that of the Passion according to Saint-Mathieu, which the master would compose three years later.

La Passion selon Saint-Jean est le premier oratorio de la passion composé par Bach lorsqu’il fut nommé cantor de l’Église Saint-Thomas de Leipzig. Cette œuvre fut exécutée pour la première fois dans le même lieu, lors des vêpres du Vendredi Saint 1724. Le compositeur avait alors trente-huit ans. La passion évoque en musique la souffrance et la mort du Christ, et cette première passion de Bach demeure inégalée. L’intensité de la très intime Passion selon Saint-Jean n’a absolument rien à envier à celle de la Passion selon Saint-Mathieu, que le maître allait composer trois ans plus tard.
