Fabrice Bollon and Simon Trpceski, These two artists are popular figures on the international concert scene, and are both signed to major record labels. The same cannot be said for the Austrian conductor and composer Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871–1942), whose musical career did not meet with success. He may have written late-Romantic music with incredibly beautiful melodies, but von Zemlinsky found himself on the margins of musical history in his own lifetime. The words of his one-time pupil, Arnold Schönberg, were of little help (and perhaps made matters worse): “I always believed he was a great composer.” Nor did he benefit from being among the group of Viennese musicians around Gustav Mahler, or his status as a major opera conductor, conducting the successful Vienna premieres of Salome and Tosca in 1900. The symphonic poem The Mermaid (Die Seejungfrau) is based on the story of the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Anderson‘s The Little Mermaid. After witnessing this performance by the Hungarian National Philharmonic, we sincerely hope many listeners will have new-found respect for this unjustly neglected composer.

Az est karmestere, az 1965-ben, Párizsban született Fabrice Bollon a nemzetközi koncertvilág egyik legszínesebb egyénisége, aki mind az operák, mind a szimfonikus zeneművek vezénylésével nagy elismertségre tett szert, az egyik legsokoldalúbb francia karmesternek tartják. Három alkalommal is Az év karmestere címre jelölte az Opernwelt Évkönyv nemzetközi zsűrije.

Zongorán közreműködik Simon Trpceski (1979) macedón zongoraművész. Mindketten a nemzetközi koncertélet ismert és kedvelt szereplői, jelentős lemezkiadók foglalkoztatott művészei. Viszont Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871–1942) osztrák karmester-zeneszerzőről ugyanezt nem lehetne elmondani, mert életútját nem kísérte sikerszéria. Hiába írt későromantikus muzsikát csodaszép dallamokkal, már életében a zenetörténet margójára került. Nem segített neki (vagy talán éppen rontott?), amit egykori tanítványa, Arnold Schönberg mondott róla: „Mindig is hittem benne, hogy nagy zeneszerző”. Nem származott előnye abból sem, hogy a Gustav Mahler körül csoportosult bécsi muzsikusok közé tartozott, de még az sem, hogy jelentős operakarmester volt: pedig ő irányította 1900-ban a Salome és a Tosca sikeres bécsi bemutatóját. A sellő (Die Seejungfrau) c. szimfonikus költeménye Andersen dán mesemondó „A kis hableány” c. történetén alapul. Őszintén reméljük, hogy a Nemzeti Filharmonikusok előadása után sokan fognak majd egy tiszteletteljes főhajtással gondolni a méltatlanul elfeledett szerzőre.
