The premiere of this production has not yet been celebrated in Coburg, which is why we are pleased that this guest performance by the Coburg State Theater is also the premiere performance.
The simple basic question of the opera is: Can women be faithful?
The philosopher Don Alfonso disputes this. The two officers Ferrando and Guglielmo vehemently disagree and let their two brides, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, know nothing. Alfonso bets them both that
he would succeed in proving the infidelity of women. With the help of the maid Despina, he stages the following game: The officers say goodbye to their brides because they supposedly have to go to war. Then they return in disguise and test the fidelity of their beloved, each with the other's fiancé.
Both women eventually become weak, and after just one day Alfonso can triumph with the words "That's how everyone does it" - "così fan tutte".
But the story is not that simple. Both couples lose themselves in a chaos of love and passion, loyalty and betrayal, steadfastness and self-abandonment.
Mozart's music traces these inner contradictions of his characters in a brilliant way, so that even the audience does not know for sure what is play and what is serious, what is dream and what is reality.
