Today the verdict will be pronounced and the guilty will be sacrificed to the law… The people in the courtroom where the trial of Dalibor is taking place are in an uproar. Is he guilty of murder or was he just defending his right? The victim’s sister, Milada, is implacably calling for severe punishment for her brother’s death, but a face-to-face meeting with Dalibor shatters her conviction. How does the king decide, at a moment when everyone present seems to be playing their own political game…

 
Smetana’s Dalibor is much more than just a romantic tragedy with beautiful music based on the medieval tale of the Knight Dalibor of Kozojedy, who learned to play the violin in prison, which was first heard on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the National Theatre. This drama about the desire for revenge, amorous passion and political intrigue is an extraordinary work to which it is not easy to find the key. British director David Pountney is one of the great admirers and promoters of Czech opera. The Brno audience could see that he can present a view revealing the deepest layers of human dramas during his production of Janáček’s Her Stepdaughter (Jenůfa) in 2004. Together with him, the excellent conductor Tomáš Hanus returns to Brno on this occasion to rehearse Smetana’s Dalibor, which has not been heard on the Brno stages for almost thirty years, as part of the Smetana200 project.

Dnes ortel bude provolán a právu viník v oběť‘ dán… Mezi lidmi v soudní síni, kde probíhá proces s Daliborem, to vře. Je vinen vraždou nebo jen hájil své právo? Sestra oběti Milada nesmiřitelně volá po přísném trestu za smrt bratra, ale setkání s Daliborem tváří v tvář otřese jejím přesvědčením. Jak rozhodne král, ve chvíli, kdy všichni přítomní zřejmě hrají vlastní politickou hru…

Smetanův Dalibor je mnohem více než jen romantickou tragédií s nádhernou hudbou vycházející ze středověké pověsti o rytíři Daliborovi z Kozojed, co se naučil ve vězení hrát na housle, která poprvé zazněla u příležitosti položení základního kamene Národního divadla. Drama o touze po pomstě, milostné vášni i politických intrikách je mimořádným dílem, k němuž není snadné nalézt klíč. Britský režisér David Pountney patří k velkým ctitelům a propagátorům české opery. Že dokáže přinést pohled odhalující nejhlubší vrstvy lidských dramat, se brněnské publikum mohlo přesvědčit při jeho inscenaci Janáčkovy Její pastorkyně v roce 2004. Společně s ním se při této příležitosti do Brna vrací vynikající dirigent Tomáš Hanus, aby společně nastudovali Smetanova Dalibora, který na brněnském jevišti nezazněl téměř třicet let, jako součást projektu Smetana200.

Heut’ hält der König selbst Gericht, wohl schont er den Empörer nicht … Im Gerichtssaal, wo Dalibor der Prozess gemacht wird, schlagen die Emotionen hohe Wellen. Hat er sich eines Mordes schuldig gemacht oder nur sein Recht verteidigt? Milada, die Schwester des Opfers, verlangt unversöhnlich nach einer harten Strafe für den Tod ihres Bruders, doch als sie Dalibor von Angesicht zu Angesicht gegenübersteht, gerät ihre Überzeugung ins Wanken. Wie wird der König in diesem Moment entscheiden, da alle Anwesenden offenbar ihr eigenes politisches Spiel spielen?

Smetanas Dalibor ist weit mehr als nur eine romantische Tragödie mit wunderbarer Musik, die erstmals anlässlich der Grundsteinlegung des Prager Nationaltheaters erklang. Das Drama basiert auf der Legende vom Ritter Dalibor von Kozojedy, der im Kerker auf der Geige zu spielen lernte. Es erzählt von Rachegelüsten, leidenschaftlicher Liebe und politischen Intrigen und darf als ein ganz außergewöhnliches Werk gelten, dessen Inhalt sich nicht auf den ersten Blick erschließt. Der britische Regisseur David Pountney zählt zu den großen Liebhabern und Fürsprechern der tschechischen Oper. Dass er in der Lage ist, tiefe Einblicke ins Innerste der menschlichen Existenz zu vermitteln, davon konnte sich das Brünner Publikum bereits bei seiner Inszenierung von Janáčeks Jenůfa im Jahr 2004 überzeugen. Zusammen mit ihm kehrt mit der gemeinsamen Einstudierung der Oper Dalibor im Rahmen des Projekts Smetana200 auch der herausragende Dirigent Tomáš Hanus nach Brno zurück, der hier fast dreißig Jahre nicht mehr zu erleben war.
