Leonard Bernstein was the first conductor to record all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies not only on disc but also on video. The recordings, made between 1971 and 1985, are not only a unique musical document, but also contributed to a new understanding of Mahler's work.
"All Mahler symphonies, all Mahler works by the way, are full of extremes. Extremes in dynamics, in tempo, in emotional meaning. If the music is bare, then it is very bare; if it is dense and powerful, it is denser and more powerful than the Götterdämmerung; when it suffers, it suffers in a way that music has never suffered before" (Leonard Bernstein).
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1936 by Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman under the name "Palestine Symphony Orchestra". Arturo Toscanini conducted the first concert on December 26, 1936. After the establishment of the State of Israel, the orchestra changed its name. From 1968 Zubin Mehta was chief conductor of the "IPO", in 1977 he was appointed music director and since 1981 he has been music director for life.
