Als Vorabend zu Richard Wagners monumentalem Weltdeutungsmythos exponiert das »Rheingold« die zentralen Themen dieser Tetralogie. »Nur wer der Liebe Macht entsagt«, der vermag das Gold des Rheines zum Ring zu schmieden, der die Weltherrschaft verleiht. Liebe und Macht schließen sich aus, so die Erkenntnis, die am Anfang dieses Zyklus’ steht. Es ist das tiefe Es in den Streichern, das uns die Idee eines natürlichen Urzustands musikalisch sinnfällig macht.
