Only those who renounce love can steal the mighty Rhine gold and forge a ring out of it that will make you the ruler of the world. Alberich takes the risk: When the Rhine daughters mockingly reject his advances, the humiliated dwarf swaps love for power. With his curse of love, he opens the door to doom, to which the father of the gods Wotan will succumb when the splendid construction of his Valhalla castle puts him in financial distress. On the eve of the “Ring des Nibelungen”, Richard Wagner processed the basic themes of his four-part opera cycle - the incompatibility of love and the pursuit of property - into a nineteenth-century critique of capitalism full of action.
