Het was een grote wens van chef-dirigent Karina Canellakis: Wagners Siegfried te dirigeren, het derde deel uit Der Ring des Nibelungen. Deze wens gaat in vervulling met een goed orkest en bijzondere solisten.

Wagner ontpopt zich als een heus dramaticus
In Siegfried zet de componist de laatste stap in zijn ontwikkeling van romantische componist naar de 'symfonicus' van het door hem uitgevonden muziekdrama. Niet zonder humor, zoals blijkt uit de briljant-komische partij voor de Nibelung Mime, geschreven voor een pregnante karaktertenor. Uitgerekend in de tweede akte, waarin de orkestrale natuurevocaties de ontdekkingsreis van de jonge held Siegfried begeleiden, raakt Wagner in 1857 in een artistieke crisis. Na vingeroefeningen met Tristan en Meistersinger keert hij als volleerd en volbloed dramaticus terug naar de Ring om het derde bedrijf van Siegfried te voltooien. Een niet te versmaden uitdaging voor elke dirigent.

Stephen Gould en Elena Stikhina
De Matinee verzamelde een bijzondere cast, met heldentenor Stephen Gould in de titelrol, die in dat befaamde derde bedrijf zijn ultieme geliefde Brünnhilde zal vinden, hier gezongen door de Russische sopraan Elena Stikhina. Een recensent schreef: 'Stikhina heeft een bijzondere allure en valt op door haar combinatie van gloed en zeggingskracht, lichtheid en energie.'

It was a great wish of chief conductor Karina Canellakis: to conduct Wagner's Siegfried, the third movement from Der Ring des Nibelungen. This wish is fulfilled with a fine orchestra and exceptional soloists.

Wagner reveals himself as a true dramatist
In Siegfried, the composer takes the final step in his development from romantic composer to the "symphonist" of the musical drama he invented. Not without humor, as evidenced by the brilliantly comic part for the Nibelung Mime, written for a terse character tenor. It was precisely in the second act, in which orchestral nature invocations accompany the young hero Siegfried's voyage of discovery, that Wagner fell into an artistic crisis in 1857. After finger exercises with Tristan and Meistersinger, he returned to the Ring as an accomplished and full-blooded dramatist to complete the third act of Siegfried. An undaunting challenge for any conductor.

Stephen Gould and Elena Stikhina
The Matinee gathered an extraordinary cast, with heroic tenor Stephen Gould in the title role, who will find his ultimate beloved Brünnhilde in that famous third act, sung here by Russian soprano Elena Stikhina. One reviewer wrote, "Stikhina has a special allure and stands out for her combination of glow and eloquence, lightness and energy.
