Surprised by a heavy storm, Daland dropped anchor. A second ship appears and also anchors. The captain of the ghost ship "The Flying Dutchman" goes ashore. Every seven years he is allowed to look for a woman who can redeem him from wandering the seas by swearing "fidelity unto death". Drawn into conversation by Daland, he asks him to be included and, when he learns that Daland has a pretty daughter, holds her hand.
Senta, Daland's daughter, expresses the wish to save the "Flying Dutchman". The hunter Erik, who loves the girl, cannot dissuade her. When the Dutchman Senta reveals his distress, she vows to be faithful to him until death. But Erik stops Senta. Feeling betrayed by Senta, the Dutchman gives the order to set sail. In vain, Senta begs him not to doubt her vow of loyalty.
The Dutchman, however, who loves her sincerely, does not want to abandon her to the damnation that hit everyone before her who broke her oath. He says goodbye and goes on board.
Senta cannot be held back and throws himself "faithful unto death" into the sea to free the Dutchman from his curse.
With the "Flying Dutchman", his fourth opera, Richard Wagner had found his style, which he continued to develop over the next forty years up to "Parsifal". The "Holländer" is also the earliest Wagner opera to be included in the program of the Bayreuth Festival.
Wagner had read the legend of the ghost ship, which is doomed to wander the seas until the Last Judgment, from Heinrich Heine. But personal experiences also shaped the genesis of the opera: while fleeing his creditors from Riga to London, Wagner and his then wife Minna experienced a ghostly raging storm in the Skagerrak with the threat of shipwreck. And the topic of salvation through the loyalty of a woman was also of particular interest to him at the time, because Minna's infidelities gave him a lot to deal with: What Wagner wanted was a faithful, loving woman who defied the bourgeois world and took her fate into her own hands of the stray lays.
The New Zealand bass-baritone Donald McIntyre, world-famous for his portrayal of Wotan in Bayreuth's "Century Ring" by Pierre Boulez and Patrice Chéreau, sings the title role in this film adaptation of Wagner's "Flying Dutchman", which is based on the production at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich based.
Director Václav Kašlík valued romantic scary romance. For his "opera thriller" he had huge pools of water built in the studio.
