Condemned to eternal wandering for having dared to defy the gods, a sailor can only hope for his salvation thanks to the love and fidelity of a woman. Such is the plot of Wagner's first masterpiece, then just thirty years old. Composing both libretto and score, the musician lays with this Vaisseau the first stone of his "musical drama" to come. Here are brought together an implacable sense of monologue, duets and choirs overflowing with lyricism, and, already, an orchestra which, far from limiting itself to accompanying the voices, becomes an actor in the drama in its own right. All the interest of this Phantom shipalso resides in François-Xavier Roth's proposal to have Wagner heard on instruments from the composer's era. "Historical credo" of the conductor and his musicians, it will undoubtedly be a whole new and exciting approach to the music of the master of Bayreuth.

Condamné à l’errance éternelle pour avoir osé défier les dieux, un marin ne peut espérer en son salut que grâce à l’amour et à la fidélité d’une femme. Telle est la trame du premier chef-d’œuvre de Wagner alors tout juste âgé de trente ans. Composant à la fois livret et partition, le musicien pose avec ce Vaisseau la première pierre de son « drame musical » à venir. Ici sont réunis un sens implacable du monologue, des duos et des chœurs débordants de lyrisme, et, déjà, un orchestre qui, loin de se borner à accompagner les voix, se fait acteur du drame à part entière. Tout l’intérêt de ce Vaisseau fantôme réside aussi dans la proposition de François-Xavier Roth de faire entendre Wagner sur les instruments de l’époque du compositeur. « Credo historique » du chef et de ses musiciens, ce sera à n’en pas douter une toute nouvelle et passionnante approche de la musique du maître de Bayreuth.
