Il vento di tempesta soffia dalla prima all’ultima battuta dell’Olandese volante, sconvolgendo il mare e il cuore dei personaggi. In quest’opera del 1843 Wagner affrontò per la prima volta un tema che l’avrebbe sempre ossessionato: la redenzione attraverso l’amore. Il libretto, ispirato a una leggenda nordica e scritto dal compositore stesso, racconta la storia di un capitano olandese condannato a navigare per l’eternità sul suo vascello fantasma, finché l’amore fedele di una donna non spezzerà la sua maledizione. Senta, una fanciulla dal cuore puro, sarà l’unica capace di salvare l’Olandese sacrificando la propria vita.

Der fliegende Holländer è da molti considerata un’opera di transizione, in cui Wagner sperimenta l’uso dei Leitmotive (temi musicali ricorrenti associati a personaggi e situazioni), mantenendo ancora elementi tradizionali, come i cori dei marinai e delle filatrici d’ispirazione popolare e le arie in stile italiano. Per tenere in equilibrio le varie componenti di quest’opera turbinosa, salirà sul podio la direttrice Nathalie Stutzmann, il cui nome si sta imponendo in ambito wagneriano, come dimostra la sua partecipazione al festival di Bayreuth. Un cast di livello internazionale si esibirà nell’allestimento firmato da Willy Decker, il cui fascino onirico suscitò applausi entusiasti all’apertura della Stagione 2012/2013 del Regio.

The storm wind blows from the first to the last bar of The Flying Dutchman, whipping up the sea and the heart of the characters. In this 1843 opera, Wagner tackled for the first time a theme that had always fascinated him: redemption through love. The libretto, inspired by a Nordic legend and written by the composer himself, tells the story of a Dutch captain condemned to sail for eternity on his ghost vessel, until the faithful love of a woman breaks the curse. Senta, a pure-hearted girl, is the only one who can save the Dutchman by sacrificing her own life.

Der fliegende Holländer is considered by many to be a transitional opera, in which Wagner experiments with the use of Leitmotives (recurring musical themes associated with characters and situations), while still maintaining traditional elements, such as the popularly inspired choruses of sailors and spinners and the Italian-style arias. Balancing the various components of this turbulent work will be the conductor Nathalie Stutzmann, who is making a name for herself in the Wagnerian circle, as demonstrated by her participation at the Bayreuth festival. An international cast will perform in the staging designed by Willy Decker, the dreamlike charm of which aroused enthusiastic applause at the 2012/2013 Teatro Regio season opening.
