Only a single hit separates Max from his happiness. If he succeeds in making a successful test shot in front of the prince, forester Kuno grants him the hand of his daughter Agathe and the forester's office. But the fear of failure paralyzes Max and makes him resort to forbidden means. In the dark Wolfsschlucht, Kaspar seduces him to cast free bullets. Six of these magic bullets hit every imaginable target unfailingly. With the seventh bullet, however, the devil takes a human victim. The next day, when the seventh bullet was in Max's gun during the all-important test shot, all the bleak omens seemed to come true.

Carl Maria von Weber's Freischütz is considered the epitome of German romantic opera. With exuberant folksyness and gloomy horror scenarios, she tells of the intrusion of the irrational and repressed events into an apparently orderly world. After several productions in the play, resident director Alexander Nerlich is now dedicating himself to a classic of the opera repertoire for the first time in Mainz.
