Opera (a właściwie rozbudowany singspiel z mówionymi dialogami) Wolny strzelec Carla Marii von Webera z 1821 roku stała się jednym z kamieni milowych w dziejach gatunku, będąc teatralno-muzycznym wyrazem wielu idei młodego romantyzmu. Jeden z jego emblematów stanowi efektowna i barwnie orkiestrowana uwertura, prezentująca motywy wykorzystane w operze oraz oddająca jej tajemniczy nastrój.

IV Symfonia „Koncertująca” to utwór charakterystyczny dla dojrzałego stylu Karola Szymanowskiego – nasycony ekspresją, bogaty harmonicznie i fakturalnie, korzystający z rozbudowanej palety orkiestrowo-fortepianowych barw, a zarazem przystępny, nawiązujący dialog z tradycją. Prawykonanie odbyło się 9 października 1932 roku w Poznaniu pod batutą Grzegorza Fitelberga, w kolejnych latach Szymanowski z powodzeniem sam prezentował swą Czwartą na estradach całej Europy.

Rówieśniczką dzieła Szymanowskiego jest symfonia – również czwarta – Franza Schmidta, za życia wysoko cenionego, dziś nieco zapomnianego austriackiego kompozytora, pianisty, wiolonczelisty i pedagoga. Jego dzieło jest jednak biegunowo odmienne – wybujała postromantyczna ekspresja, monumentalizm użytych środków bliskie są stylowi Richarda Straussa, a pełen tragizmu epizod – żałobny marsz z części wolnej – tłumaczy komentarz autora, który nazwał symfonię „requiem dla mojej córki”…

Carl Maria von Weber's 1821 opera (actually an extended singspiel with spoken dialogues) Freelance became one of the milestones in the history of the genre, being a theatrical and musical expression of many ideas of young Romanticism. One of its emblems is the impressive and colorfully orchestrated overture, presenting the motifs used in the opera and reflecting its mysterious mood.

Symphony No. 4 "Concerting" is a work characteristic of Karol Szymanowski's mature style - saturated with expression, harmonically and texturally rich, using an extensive palette of orchestral and piano colors, and at the same time accessible, establishing a dialogue with tradition. The premiere took place on 9 October 1932 in Poznań under the baton of Grzegorz Fitelberg. In the following years, Szymanowski successfully presented his Fourth on stages throughout Europe.

A contemporary of Szymanowski's work is the symphony - also the fourth - by Franz Schmidt, a highly regarded during his lifetime, today somewhat forgotten Austrian composer, pianist, cellist and teacher. His work, however, is completely different - the exuberant post-romantic expression, the monumentalism of the means used are close to the style of Richard Strauss, and the tragic episode - the funeral march from the slow movement - explains the author's comment, who called the symphony "a requiem for my daughter"...
