At the bottom of the Rhine, the Rhine daughters guard the Rhine gold, but recklessly reveal to the dwarf Alberich that whoever renounces love can forge a ring out of it that ensures unrestricted power over the world. Alberich curses love, forges the ring and sets a story in motion that exemplifies the incompatibility of love and power. Richard Wagner's “The Ring of the Nibelung” takes up four evenings in the theater, from the wave of the Rhine in E flat major to the fire of the world in “Götterdämmerung” Brünnhilde, about his grandson, the inexperienced hero Siegfried and the purity of a forest idyll. Four musical dramas fifteen hours of music - Wagner gives his audience plenty of presents, but demands a lot of stamina and concentration in equal measure. In 1992, Loriot succeeded in telling all of this in an imperceptibly shortened form in his text version “The Ring in One Evening”. Thanks to pointed formulations that summarize the processes in a few sentences, sometimes even in one word, the tricky family relationships are illuminated as well as the stages from stealing the Rhine gold to the moment when the Rhine daughters finally get it back. Chief conductor Roland Kluttig realizes the most thrilling moments of the tetralogy in concert with the Graz Philharmonic. As an eloquent, connecting moment between the vocal passages, Maria Happel can be experienced as the narrator, who has already savored Loriot's sparkling joke in his text version of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide". Maria Happel now recites Loriot's ironic comments in witty Kurzweil, which testify to his loving respect for Wagner's “The Ring of the Nibelung”.
